One more week here you have the tasks you were waiting for! 😉
READING COMPREHENSION
◇ From OPEN WORLD: READING p.22. Two people discuss health and fitness. Try to do the exercise in about 15 minutes. Read the exam tips at the top of the page.
GRAMMAR
◇ LINKING WORDS: CONTRASTING IDEAS.
In class we’ve been doing exercises 1 and 2 on page 21 of Open World, after seeing their use in context in the model essay on health and fitness on p.20. There you also have examples of linkers such as INSTEAD OF (en vez de, en lugar de + noun/-ing verb) and RATHER THAN (to compare).
In the exercises and grammar rules below we will be focusing on the rest of linkers in the unit: ALTHOUGH/ EVEN THOUGH/ THOUGH – DESPITE/ IN SPITE OF – HOWEVER (and NEVERTHELESS)
♦ From Learn English Grammar. VIDEO: despite/in spite of – although/though/even though
♦ From Perfect English Grammar. How to use although – despite/in spite of – however + online exercises.
♦ From scottsenglish.com (pdf). Nevertheless and However . How to use them and examples.
◇ GERUNDS & INFINITIVES
Here is another very interesting online link for you to continue working on this grammar point. It includes a VIDEO and three sets of exercises: gerund/ to infinitive/ bare infinitive. Go step by step and pay special attention to the rules and uses that you find harder to learn.

VOCABULARY
The following files (jpg to print, sorry!) are the photocopies on HEALTH vocabulary we have been having a glimpse at in class this week, in case you have not been able to attend the lesson. They include key expressions on the topic, most of which you are expected to be familiar with at B2 level. They may help you to do the exercises below as well (and obviously with your writing task below ?).

WRITING
♦ Following the model essay on p.20 Open World but using your own ideas (copying from the Internet sites is not an option), I would like you to write a 160-180 OPINION ESSAY on the topic «Some people say that modern lifestyles are ruining our health. Do you agree?» Include your opinion on DIET, EXERCISE and TECHNOLOGY.
The writing is designed to be done on Teams. The task will appear on the Publicaciones wall and in the Trabajos section (either access is fine). It will be available for you to complete and send back to me from Thursday 18th Nov 6:00 p.m. until Sat. 5th December 11:59 p.m. Go to Teams within this period to work on your writing. You can write and save your essay onto your device and later on copy it on Teams, if you find it more convenient.
This is a COMPULSORY task for those of you who wish to be assessed at the end of the 1st term/evaluación. The mark you will obtain from fulfilling this task will be considered for your 1st term global Writing mark.
If you do not know how to do a writing assignment on Teams: In the video below you can see how to write and hand in a writing task using Teams Trabajos/Tasks. Watch it the number of times you need before writing your essay. I hope it helps.
♦ OPINION ESSAY LAYOUT: The guidelines in the chart below can help you structure and add the necessary phrases to express opinion and the appropriate linkers to your essay. The other file is a sample writing on the topic of Internets chats and their influence on relationships and communication.

→ IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT NEXT WEEK’S LESSON
If unforeseen circumstances do not make it impossible, next week (lessons from Monday 23rd to Thursday 26th) we are going to do a LISTENING exercise and a READING comprehension test that I will take into account for your 1st term mark.
There will be more exams in these skills in the coming weeks, and I will choose the best marks you obtain and discard the other/s, so this is not your only chance but it is one more opportunity to get a good global term score.
??? If you weren’t in class last week (or feel like listening to it again)
Here is Simon and Garfunkel’s song The Sound of Silence. Watch the videos and do the gap-filling exercise to work on the simple past forms that appear in the song.
