A literary approach in the English class at IES Doctor Fleming

From Jamaica to England

(link to the presentation)

With the help of their teacher, Elena Guerreira, students of 4th  ESO adapted an original short story, “Out of Hand”, by the Scottish contemporary writer Jackie Kay  to students of 5th year of elementary education.

They visited them at their primary school, Baudilio Arce, so that they could become protagonists of a storytelling session.

The activity, titled “From  Jamaica to England”, allowed our 4th ESO teenagers to become mentors and teachers themselves, a task they fully enjoyed!

The Day of the Libraries and the Black Butterflies

In 1992,  during the Balkans War, the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in Sarajevo, was targeted and intentionally set on fire. It was burning during seveal days. As thousands of books were reduced to ashes, millions of written words in small pieces of paper were floating through the hellish air that covered the streets of the city. According to the

locals, they looked like “black butterflies”.

Every 24th of October, the International Day of Libraries commemorates this tragic loss for the cultural and intellectual heritage of the country.

Our students have paid homage to this cultural genocide filling the walls and doors of our school with black butterflies.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

During this school year, the group of 1st year ESO studying English as a Second Foreign Language has been working on A Midsummer Night’s DreamWilliam Shakeaspeare‘s well-known play.

With the help of the teacher assistant, Tenley, the master students, Lara and Cristian,  and their English teacher, Carlota, the students have learnt a lot about the characters and the playwright. But the icing on the cake is that they have been able to play it!

What wonderful actors and actresses they are! They even had the opportunity to share it with their partners. Indeed, an unforgettable experience!

Heroines of their own stories

Matilda‘s independence and intelligence, Jo March’s tenderness and determination, Katniss Everdeen‘s courage and maturity, Hermione Granger‘s honesty and sharpness,  Miss Marple‘s wit and sense of justice,  Elizabeth Bennet‘s self-respect and loyalty, Anna Frank‘s confidence and mental strength,.. Surely, heroines of their own stories, female literary characters worth being admired. Continue reading
