Classes A, B & E

Christmas Holidays assignments (all groups)

Hi everyone! Here is the homework Santa (coworking with the Three Wise Men) has left in your stocking for this holiday period. Try to find some time and make the most of it! You cannot disappoint them!  😉

  From Open World:

  • READING: We all need ‘frolleagues’ p.36
  • LISTENING: Radio interview with Dr Leonora Stockley (track 016)
  • MAKING FRIENDS IN SEOUL, pp.38-39.
    –  Do all the exercises and check the answers and listening scripts. There is very useful conversational language in this section that you need to practise for oral exchanges. We’ll come back to these informal expressions in class when practising dialogues, so try to learn and remember as much as possible of what appears in exercise 1 to 8.
    –  Watch the video about Seoul afterwards and, with the help of the script, answer the questions about the city, famous districts and landmarks and places to socialise.
    Seoul videoscript
  • PROGRESS CHECK 1, pp.40-41: do all the exercises to revise units 1 and 2.

  GRAMMAR PRACTICE:

LISTENING PRACTICE: go on working on listening if this is one of your weaknesses. We plan to do more listening tests in our next lessons, in order to give you an assessment in the skill for this first term.

◇  WRITING TASK For & Against: remember to hand it in before 3rd January via Teams. This will be good practice for the Writing Exam we will be doing in class from Monday 11 to Thursday 14 January: (Opinion/ For & Against formats, based on topics seen in units 1 & 2)
Please attend your half-group lessons to to do the writing test. If you wish to do so, but for any justified reason you find it impossible to come to school in the classtime slot assigned to your half-group, please let me know to check if you could attend any of the other groups throughout the week.

◇ MEDIATION and CONVERSATION: in our next classes we plan to do some speaking activities similar in content to the ones below. They will be taken into account for your marks in those skills, together with your participation in other oral activities in class during this first term.

  • MEDIATION: study the language in this infographic IN DETAIL. In class we’ll be doing a mediation exercise based on it:   How to wear a mask safely: Do’s and Dont’s
  • CONVERSATION: the following links are examples of conversations similar to those you may be asked to do in class with one or two classmates. They are based on the language and topics seen in units 1 and 2. By yourself, try to figure out what you could say in order to practise for the actual dialogues with your partners.

Week 14th-17th December: assignments to do for next week (21st-23rd Dec.). All groups.

Hiya,
Christmas time is round the corner!

These are the home tasks for this coming week.
◇  From Open World:

  • Grammar reference p. 209: Used to/ Get used to/ Be used to. Read the explanations and do the accompanying exercises. Do not forget to watch the Grammar on the move video on page 33 (and do exercises 2 to 7 on the same page if you have not attended school this week).
  • Phrasal verbs ex.2 and 3 on page 34: whether we have had time to see these exercises in your class or not, have a look at the list of verbs connected to the listening activity on the same page and check that you understand their meaning and how to use them. They are really essential core vocabulary when talking or writing about relationships.
  • Speculation p.32. We have seen it in class, but spare a moment revising the language resources you can use to speculate. They are useful structures that will be appearing recurringly and you will need to use in conversations or monologues.

◇  VOCABULARY: Read these two vocabulary banks in detail and keep them at hand for ideas if you need to write/speak on the topics. Check out how the words expressions are used in context.

◇  ONLINE GRAMMAR: used to (& would)/be used to/ get used to

◇  WRITING RESOURCES: Here is the ‘For & Against’ essay format to follow when writing about advantages and disadvantages. There are also two examples to illustrate. The second one is at the same time a useful exercise to practise the connectors we have been seeing for the past two weeks, apart from including two charts on the key expressions and linkers which are used in discursive essays.

FOR & AGAINST: layout example 1          example 2+exercise
◇  WRITING TASK (to send via TEAMS): How do social media and technology (mobile phones, videoconference and chat apps, etc.) influence our family relationships and friendships? Discuss pros and cons.
Use a maximum of 180 words. Try to use appropriate connectors and some of the structures we have seen (speculation, used to/be used to/get used to, passives). Send it via Teams and written in word format so that I can edit it including the corrections.

Please hand your work in for correction before the deadline (Sunday 3rd January, 23:59). It won’t be possible to submit it after that time.

……………
Next week
I’ll upload more exercises, which I hope you will find time for during the holidays. Remember that our First Evaluación comes to an end the last week of January, so before we start classes again I will upload some essential info about the 1st Term exams to do in January.
Stay connected next week and throughout the festive season, please!
Cheers for now!
