This celebration has been held in our country since 2016 in order to provide women writers´ work with more visibility and to compensate for the discrimination they have suffered throughout history.
There was a time when they had to conceal their gender under pseudonyms if they didn´t want their work to be considered inferior. Despite being regarded unsuitable for writing , female authors like Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Virginia Woolf… made a lasting mark on literature, creating strong independent female characters sometimes. They struggled for recognition and respect and they succeeded. But it is noteworthy to mention that even a 21st century author like J.K. Rowling had to use her initials to disguise her identity when she first published Harry Potter.
